Sit 'n Sleep was founded in 1985 by Delores Patterson Carter and Jim Reid Carter. The Carter's are 1967 graduates of Carrollton High School and both finished at the University of Georgia. Delores' parents, Raymond and Mable, started Patterson's TV in 1950. Mable and Butch Cammons still run the shop behind Mable's childhood home on Longview Street. Delores' sister, Nancy Patterson Davis, is a real estate agent with Duffey Realty. Jim's father, J.S. Reid Carter, came to Carrollton in 1964 to be the director of marketing for H & H Poultry.
Out of college Jim sold mattresses and hide-a-bed sofas to furniture dealers for Simmons, Jamison and Serta for over eleven years. He figured that a furniture store specializing in mattresses, recliners and sleeper sofas would flourish in Carrollton. With a lot of family encouragement the two started in the old White's Auto building owned by Clyde Cook. The front of the building faces the garden center of K-Mart and sits behind Burger King on Bankhead highway in Carrollton.
Delores and Jim's daughter, Susan Carter Hirvela, helps in the store when she is not busy with her two children. Also shown in the photo is son Zachery who is a philosopher. He also has two children and lives around the corner.
The Carters added to the building shown above in 1992 and again a few years later. Sit 'n Sleep carries the largest selection of mattresses in the area. They display over thirty different mattress models from Jamison and Sealy Posturepedic. At any price point, Sit 'n Sleep has the best value. They are experts in helping you select the mattress that is just right for you and your budget. Sit 'n Sleep also carries an extensive selection of La-Z-Boy products and is one of the most successful independent La-Z-Boy dealers in the area. Palliser Leather and Flexsteel Upholstery are also offered in the store that many say is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside.
The Carters have built their business by offering the consumer value. But don't come in looking for dining room or bedroom furniture. Sit 'n Sleep sells the fastest moving products for a furniture store: mattresses, recliners and sofas. Because they turn their merchandise faster than the average furniture store, they are able to offer their customers lower prices and a better value.
